Challenges when managing Life Sciences Projects on a Global Scale

Managing Life Sciences projects can be complex and difficult. Today, Project Teams are located around the globe. This global aspect presents additional challenges for the Project Manager.

Added complications for global projects include

  • time zone constraints,
  • cultural differences and
  • lack of a cohesive team spirit.

A Project Manager’s focus on the global aspects of the Project Team will help in reaching a successful outcome.

Communication is especially important. Team members need to have a clear project vision. Meetings scheduled on a regular basis can reinforce a sense of purpose and reduce misunderstandings. Taking advantage of shared overlaps in the workday will help in dealing with time zone differences. Video meetings can be a useful tool to help build team spirit.

One tool for managing Cultural differences is an open two-way conversation between the Project Manager and team members. A frank discussion early in the project will help the Project Manager understand and respond to issues during the project. These conversations should also allow team members to have a better understanding of expectations.

Global projects have become the norm in Pharmaceuticals and Life sciences. The Project Manager can play a key role to ensure success.
